Wheelchairs for Health Impaired Fellow Citizens

Nadační fond Livie a Václava Klausových was addressed by Formosa Foundation Thai-wan who offered their support to activities in health and social fields. The support concerned an offer to provide mechanical and electric wheelchairs for health impaired citizens of the Czech Republic.

The Fund obtained a financial gift of USD 100,000, half of which served to ensure wheelchairs from Czech suppliers. The Fund’s Board addressed three subjects specializing in the field that are well informed of people in an urgent need of a wheelchair. These were Nadace Charty 77 (Charter 77 Donation), Centrum Paraple a Kliniku rehabilitačního lékařství Albertov (the Clinic of Rehabilitation Medicine Albertov, Prague).

They mediated a list of several tens of applicants to the Board of Nadační fond Livie a Václava Klausových. The selection of those in need of a wheelchair was very difficult. Finally, the Board of Nadační fond Livie a Václava Klausových chose 15 applicants whose wheelchairs are fully or partially covered from the gift. According to the valid regulations of individual health insurance companies in 2005, most of the individuals did not have any legitimate claim to any financial contributions at all. Or the contributions of the insurance companies were not sufficient.

The other part of the financial gift was transferred to University Hospital in Motol, Prague 5, where it will be used for other selected health impaired citizens.

The festive presentation of first three wheelchairs took place on 29 August 2005. The remaining wheelchairs had been produced and delivered by the end of 2005.
